Once the Medication List item is saved, a Medication Event can be created detailing the time/period and recurrence pattern (daily, weekly etc) that the medication should be taken at
Creating the Medication Event
Back at the EMAR, Click "Create Medication Event":
The following prompt appears to create a Medication Event. Looking at this in terms of the top half and the bottom half:
- Select Medication: Type the chosen medication here, it auto-suggests options from the Medication list section based on what is being typed. The ability to save the choice will not appear if what has been typed is not in the Medication list. As stated previously, when the medication has an "NHS" symbol beside it, the NHS module will appear on the right-hand side of the screen. It is to assist with ensuring the admin has the most up-to-date information regarding the medication and the guidelines around the use and dosage when setting up the selected medication in the Medication Tracker. This time, having clicked back on the pop-up, the NHS screen will go away.
- Concentration: Reflecting info inputted for the corresponding Medication List Item
- Client Dose: Reflecting info inputted for the corresponding Medication List Item
- Form: Reflecting info inputted for the corresponding Medication List Item
- Maximum Dose within 24hrs: Reflecting info inputted for the corresponding Medication List Item
- Route: Reflecting info inputted for the corresponding Medication List Item
- Administration Method: Reflecting info inputted for the corresponding Medication List Item
- Number of medication to be given: Here, users can define how much medication is administered (up to three decimal places e.g. 0.075)
- Form: Reflecting info inputted for the corresponding Medication List Item
- Mandatory Medication: Checking this box will set this Medication to be Mandatory i.e. it will force the carer to provide an update on this medication prior to clocking out. This checkbox can also be set to be ticked by default and un-editable via Location Access Setup. For more information on Mandatory Medication, click here
- Controlled Medication: This will reflect how the medication was defined in the Medication List section. For more information on controlled medications click here
- Select Location to Administer Medication (optional): This presents a body map where specific locations can be picked to denote where a cream or gel should be applied. In the event of the cream/gel requiring application on multiple parts of the body, click "Add Location" to allow a follow up spot to be chosen.
Once all locations have been chosen click "Confirm".
The bottom half of the Create Medication Event prompt will look as follows:
13. Any Additional Client Specific Details?: Utilise this free text box to add any other pertaining info for this client and the corresponding medication event.
14. Start Date: This is the date from which the Medication will commence. It will default to today's date if no other date has been chosen.
15. Finish Date: If the Medication should have an assigned conclusion date - it can be inputted here using the date picker dropdown.
16. Review Date: This is a date which can be chosen for the medication to be reviewed. For more information on this, click here
17. Assign Times/Periods Medication Should Be Taken:
Time:
If the medication time(s) are to be time specific, multiple times can be picked via the Time field below. Once a time is picked, click "+Add Time to Schedule" to save the time. Repeat this action to add multiple times in the day to the medication event.
Period:
Normally, a medication will be assigned a general period in the day as to when it should be administered i.e. over a particular time range in the day. With the "Period" tab selected below, choose from the available periods as to when they medications should be administered. Please reach out to One Touch Health support in order to define the start and end times of medication periods.
Any:
Choose the "Any" period if the time a medication is administered is not relevant. This may be applicable in the case of most PRNs.
18. PRN: Check this box if the medication is a PRN. It's important to ensure this is checked for PRNs as it will affect how the medication renders on the EMAR audit. For more information on the EMAR audit, click here
19. Recurrence Pattern:
The pattern of days or weeks in which medications should be administered can vary. It may be the case it's a certain amount of days in a week, every day in the week, or just a one off administration. Whatever the pattern may be, can be defined at this point. See below a quick video showing how the pattern can vary if needed:
Click "Save" to commit this event to the client's EMAR.
The client's medication tracker will now update to reflect the chosen times as part of the medication event.
The boxes with the times set will change colour as different actions are made by the carer with the medication. Users can follow the changes using this colour guide:
